How Temporary Email Works: Create, Receive & Expire

InboxFlick turns a browser session into a short-lived email inbox. The address receives ordinary internet mail while a separate browser credential controls who can read it.

Create an address

1. Create a random temporary address

Select Create an address and InboxFlick generates a random mailbox on one of InboxFlick’s receiving domains. No name, phone number, password, or permanent email address is requested. The default lifetime begins immediately and the screen shows the address and remaining time.

2. Keep the reading credential in this browser

The public email address and the private reading credential are different. InboxFlick sends the credential in a Secure, HttpOnly cookie, while the database stores only a one-way token hash. Someone who only knows the address cannot use the website to open its messages.

3. Receive and process internet mail

Mail systems look up the inboxflick.com MX record and deliver messages to InboxFlick's SMTP gateway. The gateway accepts mail only for an active address, then a worker parses the message, removes unsafe HTML features, and makes the safe text or HTML body available in the inbox.

4. Refresh in real time

The open inbox listens for delivery events and refreshes the message list when processing finishes. Delivery still depends on the sender: a website may delay a message, mistype the address, or block temporary-email domains before it ever reaches InboxFlick.

5. Extend or destroy the inbox

Each mailbox starts with 10 minutes and can be extended in 10-minute steps up to the fixed one-hour maximum. You can also destroy it early. Destruction immediately removes browser access and starts permanent cleanup.

6. Stop delivery and clean up after expiry

After the active lifetime ends, InboxFlick no longer treats the address as a usable inbox and the browser cannot read or extend it. The cleanup process deletes its messages and mailbox record, including the creation IP stored with that short-lived mailbox. There is no recovery path after permanent deletion.
